# Is LPG in India propane or butane?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/indian-lpg-propane-butane-mix

Both. PPAC's Ready Reckoner describes LPG as about 40% propane and 60% butane. That is why Indian factories use the general LPG emission factor, about 2.98 kg CO2 per kg from IPCC, rather than a pure propane or pure butane figure.

## What PPAC says

- LPG contains propane (40%) and butane (60%).
- Natural gas contains 60 to 95% methane.

## Why it matters for your numbers

Propane and butane have slightly different carbon content per kilogram, so a pure-gas factor from a foreign database can be a little off for Indian LPG. Bill quantities in kilograms times the LPG factor is the standard route.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the quantity and unit printed on each fuel invoice, converts it with a stated density or calorific value, and shows the factor and source on every line, so a litre or kilogram is never guessed.
