# What is the CO2 per tonne km of moving cargo by inland waterway barge?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/inland-waterway-barge-co2-per-tonne-km

Divide the barge's diesel for the trip by tonnes carried times km sailed, then multiply litres by 2.68 kg CO2. Count the empty return leg against the loaded trip. Loading cranes and trucks to and from the jetty are separate legs.

## Records

- Fuel log per voyage, in litres.
- Cargo tonnes from the bill of lading.
- Route distance, including the return leg if the barge comes back empty.

## Comparing with road

Compare door to door: add the truck legs to and from both jetties before setting the barge against a direct truck.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site. Intensity per unit uses the activity count you enter, and estimates are labelled as estimates.
