# What should we check ourselves before an external verifier looks at our emissions?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/internal-review-before-external-verification

Run the checks a verifier would: totals match the invoices, units are right, factors are from the right year, every month is there and estimates are labelled. A one-day internal review usually finds the errors that would otherwise come back as findings and cost a second round.

## The checklist

- Twelve months of bills and invoices for every source.
- Units: kWh not kVAh, litres not kg, SCM not MMBTU unless converted.
- Factors: source and year stated.
- Fuel used, not just bought.
- Estimates marked with the method.

## Sense checks

- Emissions per tonne of output against last year.
- Litres per unit for DG sets.
- Fuel per tonne of steam for boilers.

## Who does it

Someone who did not prepare the figures, even a colleague from accounts.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible keeps every figure linked to its source invoice or bill with a fingerprint, so a verifier can trace a total back to the documents it came from.
