# How much does ISO 14001 certification cost an Indian MSME?

There is no fixed price. ISO 14001 certification cost is the audit days your certification body must spend, set by your headcount and environmental complexity, times its day rate, plus two surveillance audits and your own preparation time. Get two or three quotes in audit days, not a lump sum.

## What sets the number of audit days

Accredited certification bodies follow IAF MD 5, the accreditation network's mandatory document on audit time (the International Accreditation Forum merged into Global Accreditation Cooperation in January 2026). It gives a minimum audit time for environmental management systems from two inputs: the number of people working under the system, and the complexity of your environmental aspects (a plating or chemical unit sits higher than an assembly shop). Extra sites, shifts and outsourced processes add time. A body may adjust within limits but must justify cutting below the table.

## The three year cost cycle

1. Initial certification: a Stage 1 document and readiness review, then a Stage 2 audit on site. Together these are the initial audit days.
2. Surveillance audits in year 2 and year 3, each usually about one third of the initial audit time.
3. Recertification before the certificate expires at three years, usually about two thirds of the initial time, and the cycle restarts.

## Costs outside the certification body's quote

- A consultant to build the system, if you use one. This is optional and often the largest single cost.
- Staff time for aspect registers, legal register, training, internal audit and management review.
- Compliance work the audit will test: valid consents from the State Pollution Control Board, hazardous waste returns, stack or effluent monitoring reports.
- Auditor travel and stay, which some bodies bill separately.

## How to compare quotes fairly

- Ask each body to state audit days for Stage 1, Stage 2, each surveillance and recertification, and its day rate.
- Confirm the body is accredited for ISO 14001 by a recognised accreditation body, such as NABCB in India. An unaccredited certificate may not be accepted by buyers.
- Be wary of a quote with far fewer days than others for the same headcount; it may not meet IAF MD 5.
- Ask which edition the quote covers. ISO 14001:2026 was published in April 2026, and existing 2015 certificates move to it over a transition of about three years, often at a surveillance or recertification audit.
- Ask for a combined audit price if you also want ISO 9001 or ISO 50001.

## Worked example: counting audit days over three years

- Initial audit time quoted (Stage 1 plus Stage 2): 6 days
- Surveillance in year 2 and year 3: about 6 / 3 = 2 days each
- Audit days in the first cycle: 6 + 2 + 2 = 10 days
- Three year certification body cost = 10 x quoted day rate + travel, before your own preparation costs

The 6 days is an illustrative input, not a figure from the IAF MD 5 table for any particular headcount. Use the days and day rate in your own quotes.
