# Can a Japanese steel or aluminium exporter deduct GX emissions trading costs from CBAM?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/japan-gx-ets-carbon-price-cbam-deduction

Only for a price effectively paid. Japan's GX emissions trading becomes mandatory for large emitters from 2026, with allowances largely free at first. Until a plant pays for allowances beyond its allocation, there is little to deduct. Keep the evidence ready.

## What changes from 2026

Japan has moved its GX emissions trading from voluntary participation to a mandatory scheme for companies above an emissions threshold. Allocation is expected to be largely free in the early years.

## What counts for CBAM

- Allowances actually bought and surrendered beyond the free amount.
- Any separate carbon levy actually paid.
- Net of rebates or compensation.

## Check before declaring

The Commission decides how foreign carbon prices are recognised. Confirm the current rules and keep the allocation and surrender records for the year.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel, electricity and production documents into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions an EU importer asks for.
