# How should a Jhagadia chemical plant count emissions from the steam it uses?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/jhagadia-chemical-plant-steam-co2

Steam from your own boiler is Scope 1, worked out from the fuel burned. Steam bought from a neighbour or common utility is Scope 2, using the supplier's emissions per tonne of steam. Then share steam between products by metered use.

## Own boiler

Count coal, gas or biomass burned, with the fuel's emission factor. Steam meters are useful for sharing, but the emissions come from the fuel.

## Bought steam

Ask the supplier for kg CO2 per tonne of steam, based on its fuel and boiler efficiency. If it will not give one, estimate from the fuel it uses and a typical efficiency, and label the estimate.

## Sharing between products

Use steam meters on each block or reactor where you have them. Where you do not, share by batch hours or by design steam use, and say which method you used.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel, electricity and production documents into dated, fingerprinted plant records, so the monthly intensity behind a figure can be traced to its source.
