# How does a Kanpur tannery count the chrome and chemicals it buys?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/kanpur-tannery-chrome-tanning-chemicals-scope-3

Basic chromium sulphate, fatliquors, dyes and other chemicals bought for tanning are Scope 3 category 1 purchased goods. Use kilograms from the invoices and a factor from the supplier or a named database, with the source on each line.

## Keep it traceable

Record kg per chemical from each invoice.

Note the factor, its unit and where it came from.

Keep chemicals separate from hides, which are their own purchased-goods line.

## What stays in Scope 1 and 2

Boiler fuel and generator diesel are Scope 1; grid electricity is Scope 2. Effluent sent to the common treatment plant is Scope 3 category 5.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the energy invoices behind the making stage into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, and keeps material invoices on the Scope 3 trail. Material factors come from your supplier or a named database and are labelled with their source, so the product figure can be traced line by line.
