# How much mine methane comes with coking coal from Karaganda underground mines?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/karaganda-coking-coal-mine-methane-steel

Karaganda coking coal comes from deep underground mines, which release far more methane than open pits. Without mine data, IPCC Tier 1 gives 18 cubic metres per tonne, with a range of 10 to 25, plus about 2.5 after mining. Ask for ventilation measurements.

## The default

- Underground mining: 10 to 25 cubic metres per tonne, 18 average (IPCC 2006).
- Post mining: about 2.5 cubic metres per tonne.
- One cubic metre weighs about 0.67 kg.

## Measured is better

Gassy mines monitor ventilation air and degasification. A figure from those records is more accurate than the default.

## Where it goes

Scope 3 for a steel plant buying the coal. Scope 1 if your group runs the mine, as some integrated steel groups do.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible turns supplier invoices into a Scope 3 record with the supplier, quantity and factor behind every figure, so you can see which supplier data is still missing.
