# How does a Mombasa cement grinder count imported clinker in Scope 3?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/kenya-cement-clinker-imports-scope-3

Clinker you buy is a purchased good, so its emissions go in Scope 3 Category 1, while your grinding electricity is Scope 2 and your dryer fuel is Scope 1. Ask the clinker plant for its figure per tonne; without it, use a published default and label it. Clinker usually dominates cement footprint.

## Split

- Scope 1: fuel for drying slag, pozzolana or limestone.
- Scope 2: grinding mill electricity at the Kenya grid factor.
- Scope 3 Category 1: clinker, gypsum and additives.

## Clinker figure

Calcination alone gives around half a tonne of CO2 per tonne of clinker, and kiln fuel adds more. Supplier data is far better than an average.

## Lower clinker ratio

Blending more pozzolana or slag cuts the footprint per tonne of cement directly.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads purchase invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record, so each supplier figure in your Scope 3 sits next to the quantity and the document it applies to.
