# What grid emission factor should a Kenyan factory use for Scope 2?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/kenya-grid-emission-factor-for-factories

Kenya's grid is mostly geothermal, hydro and wind, with thermal plants running in dry years, so the factor is low, usually under 0.2 kg CO2 per kWh. Take the official or IEA figure for the reporting year and cite it, because a dry year with more thermal generation can push it up.

## Year matters

Hydro output varies with rainfall. In a dry year more oil fired plants run, so use the figure for your actual year if one exists.

## Watch for

- Diesel backup, which is Scope 1.
- Using a world average, which badly overstates Kenyan grid power.

## Show it

kWh from bills, factor, source and year on the same line.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills into a dated, fingerprinted record per site and applies the grid factor you choose with its source and year shown, so a buyer can see exactly which figure was used.
