# The Khurja potteries profile of The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) says the cluster uses 18,442 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) but its table total prints 16,192: which is right?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/khurja-pottery-energy-total-18442-or-16192

The table's rows add to 18,442 toe, the figure the profile's text uses, so the printed total of 16,192 is 2,250 short. The profile cannot settle it: the 80 to 85% thermal share it gives for a pottery unit sits closer to 16,192. Do not cost or size anything from either total; use your own invoices.

## What the profile prints

- Text, under cluster level consumption: the total annual energy consumption is estimated at 18,442 toe.
- Table, 2015: light diesel oil and rubber process oil (LDO and RPO) 19,032 kilolitres (kL), 14,602 toe; natural gas 1.5 million cubic metres, 1,455 toe; electricity 27.7 million kilowatt hours (kWh), 2,385 toe; total 16,192 toe.
- Rows added: 14,602 + 1,455 + 2,385 = 18,442. The text matches the rows. The printed total is 2,250 lower.

## Does the shares line help?

The profile says thermal energy is 80 to 85% and electrical 15 to 20% for a pottery unit, not for the cluster total, so this check applies a unit-level range to the cluster rows. On 18,442 toe, electricity is 2,385 / 18,442 = 12.9% and thermal 87.1%. On 16,192, electricity is 14.7% and thermal 85.3%, closer to the stated range but still just outside it. If 16,192 were the true total, the oil row would be 12,352 toe, not 14,602. I cannot tell from the profile which figure is wrong.

## The bill column does not tie either

- Electricity: 27.7 million kWh x the printed energy charge of rupees (Rs) 6.50 a kWh is Rs 180 million; the table prints Rs 18.0 million, one tenth.
- LDO and RPO: the profile prints Rs 55,000 a kL for LDO and Rs 32,000 for RPO. 19,032 kL comes to Rs 1,047 million at the first and Rs 609 million at the second; the table prints Rs 82.0 million.
- The printed bills do add up (82.0 + 6.0 + 18.0 = 106.0), but I could not find what they are measured against, so do not take a cost from this table.

## What to quote instead

1. Your own litres of LDO or RPO, cubic metres of gas and kWh for the last twelve months.
2. If you must cite the cluster, give the rows and say the profile's total and text differ.
3. Keep oil kL and toe in separate columns, so each can be checked. That is my own advice, not the profile's.

## The two totals side by side

- Rows: 14,602 + 1,455 + 2,385 = 18,442 toe, as the text says
- Printed total: 16,192 toe, a difference of 2,250
- Electricity share: 2,385 / 18,442 = 12.9%, or 2,385 / 16,192 = 14.7%
- Oil toe if 16,192 were right: 16,192 less 1,455 less 2,385 = 12,352

All figures are the profile's own. The 80 to 85% range is stated for a pottery unit. Cluster data is from 2015; the cause of the differences is not stated in the profile.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel invoices and electricity bills into monthly records, so a year of power, oil and gas bills gives you your own totals to set beside these. It does not measure boilers or read a profile report, and it is not a third-party verifier.
