# What is the carbon footprint of a kirana store?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/kirana-store-carbon-footprint

For most kirana stores it is the electricity bill: fridges, freezers, lights and fans, at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh. Add an inverter's losses or a small genset if you have one. Goods you sell carry their own footprint, which sits in Scope 3 and is rarely asked of a small shop.

## Count

- Units on the monthly electricity bill.
- Diesel or petrol for a genset or delivery bike.
- Refrigerant top-ups for an old fridge.

## Easy cuts

A newer star-rated fridge and LED lights cut the bill and the carbon together.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site. Intensity per unit uses the activity count you enter, and estimates are labelled as estimates.
