# How is methane from a municipal landfill estimated?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/landfill-gas-methane-municipal-landfill

Landfills release methane for decades as organic waste decays. Operators estimate it with the IPCC first order decay method, using waste tonnes by type each year, then subtract gas captured and flared. Methane from waste still counts, at a GWP of 27.0 under IPCC AR6.

## Inputs

- Waste tonnes received each year, by type if possible.
- Years the site has been open.
- Gas captured and flared or used, from flow meters.

## Biogenic CO2

CO2 from decay and from flaring is biogenic and reported separately. Methane released is counted in the total.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads bills, fuel invoices and production records into dated, fingerprinted records, so the figure you send a buyer can be traced to its documents.
