# How do I calculate the carbon footprint of a leather belt?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/leather-belt-carbon-footprint-per-piece

Take the leather area per belt, including cutting waste, and multiply by your tannery's per-square-foot figure. Add the buckle by metal weight, edge paint, stitching and packing, then divide the unit's electricity by belts passed.

## Materials

- Finished leather per belt from strap length and width, plus cutting waste.
- Buckle and keeper: zinc alloy, brass or steel by weight.
- Edge paint, glue and thread.

## Making

- Strap cutting, skiving, creasing and stitching machines.
- Edge painting and drying.
- Boxes, sleeves and cartons.

## Per piece

Leather is usually most of the total, so the tannery's figure matters most. Report per belt by width and length.

## Worked example: belt unit per piece (one month)

- Electricity: 8,000 kWh x 0.710 = 5,680 kg CO2
- Belts passed: 25,000
- Plant total: 5,680 / 25,000 = 0.227 kg CO2 per belt
- Add leather and buckles for the full figure

Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
