# How much carbon does an LED billboard emit?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/led-billboard-electricity-emissions

An LED billboard's emissions are its electricity, often running 16 to 24 hours a day. Multiply metered kWh by 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh. The media owner pays the bill and reports it as Scope 2. An advertiser can count its share as Scope 3 purchased services.

## Estimate without a meter

Panel power rating times hours on times average brightness, labelled as an estimate until a meter is fitted.

## Cut it

Dimming at night and switching off between midnight and dawn cuts power sharply.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site. Intensity per unit uses the activity count you enter, and estimates are labelled as estimates.
