# How does a gas-based DRI steel plant in Libya work out its CBAM figure?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/libya-dri-steel-exporter-cbam-figure

Count natural gas used in the DRI reformer and furnace, carbon in electrodes and charge carbon in the arc furnace, and fuel for reheating. Use a mass balance where carbon stays in the steel. Gas-based DRI usually gives a lower figure than coal or blast furnace routes, which is worth proving.

## Inputs

- Natural gas to the DRI module.
- Electrodes, coke and lime in the arc furnace.
- Gas or oil for reheating before rolling.

## Not charged

Electricity for the arc furnace is reported but not charged for steel.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel, power and production records into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions your EU importer asks for.
