# Which grid emission factor should a Malaysian supplier use?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/malaysia-grid-emission-factor-by-region

Use the official grid emission factor for the region where the power was used and the year it was used. Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak run separate grids. Peninsular power is coal and gas heavy; Sarawak's is mostly hydropower, so its factor is much lower. Never use one national average for all three.

## Pick the right figure

- Location based Scope 2: the published factor for your grid region and year.
- Market based Scope 2: renewable energy certificates or a supply contract that meets the Scope 2 Quality Criteria.
- Off grid or captive supply: the supplying plant's own rate.

## Keep it auditable

Record the publication, its year and the value. Use the same source each year and update when a new figure appears.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads each site's monthly electricity bills into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 2 record. Grid factors outside India are entered from the official source for the country and year, and are labelled with that source.
