# If my rolling mill sells mill scale, who counts its emissions?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/mill-scale-sold-who-counts-emissions

Usually you carry no emissions out with it. Mill scale is a by-product of rolling, so your rolling emissions stay with your steel. The sinter plant or briquette maker that uses it counts the emissions of processing it. Record tonnes sold for your material balance.

## Exceptions

If mill scale earns meaningful revenue, some product footprints allocate a share of emissions to it by value. Use the same rule every year and state it.

## For CBAM

Mill scale is not a CBAM good. The iron leaving with it matters only in a mass balance, as carbon content near zero.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record, so each figure shows the quantity, factor and document it came from.
