# What is the Mohali tractor and auto parts cluster's footprint, and what do OEMs want?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/mohali-tractor-parts-cluster-carbon

Mohali's 900 engineering MSMEs used 20,969 toe a year in TERI's 2015 profile, 84% of it grid electricity, and tractor and auto parts makers used three quarters of it. For an OEM's supplier request, your own power is often the smaller number: the steel you buy, about 300 t a year for an average unit, can outweigh it.

## Who is in the cluster

- About 4,000 MSMEs, 900 of them engineering: 700 tractor and auto parts, 100 steel fabrication, 50 railway components, 40 bathroom fittings, 10 forging units making elastic rail clips.
- Customers include tractor and combine makers in and around Mohali, and Indian Railways' coach and loco works in Kapurthala and Patiala.
- Each unit makes 50 to 100 different parts and records pieces, not tonnes. Turnover about Rs 6,000 crore.
- Steel is almost 70% of production cost; an average unit uses about 300 t a year.

## Energy by segment

- Tractor and auto parts 15,744 toe (75%), steel fabrication 2,249, railway components 1,398, sanitary fittings 910, forging 667.
- Electricity 17,716 toe (84%), diesel for DG sets 2,796 toe (13%), furnace oil 457 toe.
- DG sets now run about 25 to 30 hours a month. Connected load is 50 to 80 kVA for micro units, 80 to 120 for small and 120 to 200 for medium.

## What an OEM will ask you

1. Grid kWh and DG diesel for the year, with the factor used for each.
2. Steel bought, by grade, mill and tonnes, since it can be your largest number.
3. A figure per part, allocated by mass or machine hours, using the same basis every year.
4. The share of your output that goes to that OEM, so it can take only its part of your footprint.

## Cuts TERI listed

- Electrical measures across the cluster: 10 to 15% less power, from air leaks, VFD screw compressors, IE3 motors, correctly sized capacitors and LED lighting.
- Sanitary fittings units still on oil-fired melting: electric furnaces are 25 to 35% more efficient, and 30 to 35 units have already switched.
- About 30% of units run CNC or VMC machines; the rest still use conventional machine tools.

## Worked example: an average tractor parts unit

- Electricity: 13.18 million kWh a month across 700 units = about 18,800 kWh a unit a month, 226,000 kWh a year
- Scope 2: 226,000 x 0.675 = about 153 t CO2
- Steel bought: 300 t x 2.0 t CO2 per tonne = 600 t CO2
- Steel is about four times the power footprint: 600 / 153 = 3.9

TERI's 2015 averages with Senseible's FY 2025-26 grid factor. The 2.0 t per tonne steel figure is an example; ask your mill for its own. DG diesel adds a little more to your Scope 1.

## What Senseible does here

Upload PSPCL bills, diesel slips and steel purchase invoices and Senseible separates your own Scope 1 and 2 from the steel you bought, so an OEM's supplier sheet gets both, each line traceable to a document.
