# How much working capital can an MSME get from a bank: is it 20 percent of turnover?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/msme-working-capital-20-percent-turnover

Often, yes. For micro and small enterprises needing fund-based working capital up to Rs 5 crore, banks assess the limit at a minimum of 20 percent of projected annual turnover, with you bringing 5 percent as margin. Above that, or if your operating cycle needs more, banks use other methods.

## Where the 20 percent comes from

The Nayak Committee method puts working capital need at 25 percent of projected annual turnover. Of that, the bank finances at least 20 percent and the borrower brings 5 percent as net working capital. RBI raised the ceiling for this simplified method to Rs 5 crore of fund-based limits in 1999, and RBI's FAQ on MSME lending still describes limits computed at a minimum of 20 percent of estimated turnover up to Rs 5 crore. Bank policies note that the 20 percent assumes an operating cycle of about three months.

## What projected turnover means to the bank

- It is next year's sales, not last year's, but the bank will test it against GST returns, past growth and orders in hand.
- Turnover through GST returns and bank credits is believed more than a figure only in the projections.
- Inflating it to get a bigger limit backfires: drawing power is later set from your stock and debtors statements.

## When the limit is different

- Above Rs 5 crore, banks assess by the cash budget or the traditional method based on your operating cycle and drawing power.
- If your operating cycle is long, say large stocks of raw material, RBI guidance lets the bank sanction the higher figure from the traditional method.
- Seasonal businesses may get a peak and non-peak limit.
- Whatever the method, the bank decides the final limit after appraisal; 20 percent is a floor for assessment, not a promise.

## Worked example: projected turnover of Rs 3 crore

- Working capital need: 25 percent x Rs 3 crore = Rs 75 lakh
- Bank finance at the 20 percent minimum: Rs 60 lakh
- Your margin at 5 percent: Rs 15 lakh, from your own funds or long-term sources

The bank can sanction more if your operating cycle justifies it, and less if the projection is not believed.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible keeps your purchase invoices, electricity bills and fuel slips as a fingerprinted record with monthly energy and emissions totals, useful when a lender also asks about energy use or climate data alongside your working capital application.
