# Are natural dyes lower carbon than synthetic dyes?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/natural-dye-vs-synthetic-dye-carbon

Not automatically. Natural dyes avoid petrochemical dye making, but often need more dye material, mordants such as alum, more dyebaths and more hot water. Hot water is usually the big energy use. Compare kg CO2e per kg of fabric with measured steam or fuel on both.

## What decides the result

- Steam or fuel per kg of fabric dyed.
- Dye material grown, harvested and extracted.
- Mordants and fixing agents.
- Number of dips to reach the shade.

## Making a claim

Say "lower carbon" only with your own measured comparison. "Natural" alone is not a carbon claim.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads bills, fuel invoices and production records into dated, fingerprinted records, so the figure you send a buyer can be traced to its documents.
