# How does a Navi Mumbai data centre calculate Scope 2 emissions per kW of IT load?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/navi-mumbai-data-centre-scope-2-per-kw

Multiply total facility electricity, which is IT load times PUE, by 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh for the location-based figure, then divide by average IT load in kW. Report a market-based figure separately for renewable power bought under open access or certificates.

## The inputs

1. Total facility kWh from the utility bill and any on-site generation.
2. IT load kWh from UPS or PDU metering, to calculate PUE.
3. Average IT load in kW for the period.

## Location and market based

The location-based figure uses the grid factor. The market-based figure uses the factor of power you have contracted, such as green open access with its certificates, and the grid factor for the rest. Report both; customers asking for their share usually want the market-based figure.

## Allocating to customers

Colocation customers want their share. Allocate facility emissions by their metered IT kWh, so cooling and losses follow their load through PUE.

## Worked example: one month (illustrative inputs)

- IT energy: 1,500 kW x 720 hours = 1,080,000 kWh
- Facility energy at PUE 1.45: 1,080,000 x 1.45 = 1,566,000 kWh
- Location-based: 1,566,000 x 0.710 = 1,111,860 kg CO2
- Per kW of IT load: 1,111.86 t / 1,500 = 0.741 t CO2 per kW for the month

Load and PUE are illustrative; use metered IT and facility energy.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site. Intensity per unit uses the activity count you enter, and estimates are labelled as estimates.
