# Is electricity from a Nigerian cement plant's own gas turbines Scope 1 or Scope 2?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/nigeria-cement-plant-captive-gas-power-scope-1

If the plant owns or controls the turbines, the gas burnt is Scope 1, and there is no Scope 2 for that power. Only power bought from the grid or a third party is Scope 2. Report the gas by volume and heat content from the supply invoices or meters, with the factor and its source.

## The test

Control decides it. A turbine you own and run is your Scope 1. An independent power producer on your site selling you electricity is Scope 2.

## Diesel backup

Diesel generators you own are Scope 1 as well. Keep their fuel separate so the backup share is visible.

## Records

Gas supply invoices or meter readings with heating value, generator fuel logs and any grid bills.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel, raw material and electricity invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per plant, so the clinker and cement figures can be traced back to the documents behind them.
