# How do I calculate the carbon footprint of recycled PET flakes per kilogram?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/pet-bottle-recycling-flakes-carbon-per-kg

Add the wash line electricity at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh and the hot wash heating fuel at its default factor, then divide by kilograms of clean flakes. Add collection and baling transport from the aggregator, and report process losses.

## Process stages

- Sorting and label removal.
- Grinding into flakes.
- Hot washing with caustic and detergent.
- Rinsing, drying and bagging.

## Yield

Labels, caps, dirt and fines are lost. Divide by clean flakes out, not bales in, and report the yield.

## Comparing with virgin PET

Buyers may compare with virgin resin. Keep your flake figure as measured and present any comparison as a separate, labelled estimate using the resin supplier's factor.

## Worked example: one month (illustrative inputs)

- Electricity (shredder, washers, dryers): 95,000 kWh x 0.710 = 67,450 kg CO2
- Hot wash heating PNG: 12,000 scm x 2.05 = 24,600 kg CO2
- Clean flakes, kg: 400,000
- Total: 92,050 / 400,000 = 0.230 kg CO2 per kg

Inputs are illustrative; use electricity and gas bills and the production register.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 records. A per-unit figure divides those by the output you enter, and purchased materials are added from supplier data on the Scope 3 trail, labelled by source.
