# What carbon figure should a foundry use for pig iron bought from an integrated steel plant?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/pig-iron-sold-to-foundries-carbon-data

Ask the plant for direct emissions per tonne of pig iron from its blast furnace balance, including coke and sinter, for the year. Pig iron under CN 7201 is a CBAM good, so plants exporting to the EU already work this out. For a domestic foundry it is Scope 3, Category 1, purchased goods.

## Where the figure comes from

Pig iron carries most of a blast furnace plant's emissions: coke making, sintering and the furnace itself. The plant can give a per tonne figure from its mass balance.

## If you export castings

Cast articles under CN 7325 are outside CBAM, while other iron and steel articles under 7326 are in scope. Either way some buyers ask for a product figure, and the pig iron figure is the largest input.

## Records

Purchase invoices with tonnes and grade, and the plant's figure with its year.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads coal, coke, gas, electricity and freight invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so each figure in a CBAM or buyer response can be traced back to the documents behind it.
