# How are the emissions from dredging a port channel counted?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/port-channel-dredging-emissions-who-counts

Dredgers burn large amounts of marine diesel to cut, pump and dump sediment. The dredging contractor reports that fuel as Scope 1. A port authority that hires the contractor reports it as Scope 3, or as Scope 1 if it runs its own dredgers. Record fuel per cubic metre moved.

## What to measure

- Fuel bought for each dredger, from bunker delivery notes.
- Cubic metres of sediment dredged.
- Distance to the dumping ground.

## Capital or maintenance

Capital dredging for a new berth is a one-off project. Maintenance dredging repeats every year and belongs in your annual inventory.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads bills, fuel invoices and production records into dated, fingerprinted records, so the figure you send a buyer can be traced to its documents.
