# How do I calculate the carbon footprint of potato chips per kg?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/potato-chips-carbon-footprint-per-kg

Take the raw potatoes per kg of chips from your yield and use the grower's figure. Add frying oil absorbed, fryer fuel, slicing and line electricity and the laminated packs, then divide plant energy by kg packed. Potatoes, oil and fryer fuel are the main shares.

## Ingredients

- Potatoes per kg of chips; yield is usually low because of water loss.
- Frying oil absorbed, from oil bought minus oil left.
- Salt and seasoning.

## Process

- Washing, peeling and slicing.
- Continuous fryer heated by gas or thermic fluid.
- Seasoning, nitrogen flushing and packing.

## Per kg and per pack

Report per kg and per pack with its net weight.

## Worked example: chips line per kg (one month)

- Electricity: 40,000 kWh x 0.710 = 28,400 kg CO2
- PNG: 25,000 SCM x 2.05 = 51,250 kg CO2
- Kg of chips packed: 150,000
- Plant total: 79,650 / 150,000 = 0.531 kg CO2 per kg
- Add potatoes, oil and packaging for the full figure

Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
