# Puro.earth, Isometric or Verra: which suits a biochar project?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/puro-vs-isometric-vs-verra-biochar

All three take biochar projects from India. Isometric's Biochar Protocol v1.0 and Verra's VM0044 v1.2 were approved for the ICVCM CCP label in August 2025; Puro.earth, which wrote the first biochar methodology, is a CCP-Eligible programme. Pick by which buyers you are selling to, how your kilns run and how often you need issuance.

## Puro.earth

- Credit: the CORC, one tonne of durable net removal, issued after verification.
- Methodology: Puro Biochar, Edition 2025, version 2. Biochar is labelled 200+ years.
- Audits: a facility audit by an independent VVB, valid up to five years, then an output audit per reporting period. Puro.earth pays the auditors.
- Credits are sold to buyers directly, through marketplaces or through brokers.

## Isometric

- Credit: one certificate per tonne, issued per production batch on a public registry with the data behind it.
- Protocol: Biochar Production and Storage, whose v1.0 is CCP-approved. Modules cover industrial plants, distributed production, mobile reactors and combustion co-products.
- Durability: soil storage credited at 200 years, or 1,000 years with extra testing.
- Steps: eligibility check, 10-day public comment, validation with a site visit, batch verification, issuance. Isometric picks the verifier, and buyers pay for certification, not project developers.

## Verra VM0044 v1.2

- Credit: VCUs on the Verra Registry, where anyone can open an account.
- CCP-approved since August 2025. Additionality now includes an investment analysis under VT0008.
- Registration follows Verra's pipeline listing, 30-day public comment, validation and verification, then the issuance levy.

## How to choose

- Selling to a buyer who names a registry: use that one.
- Many small kilns across villages: check Isometric's distributed production module and how each registry treats open kilns.
- Need frequent cash: Isometric issues per batch; Puro offers on-demand issuance through Puro Issuance Plus for eligible industrial suppliers.
- Want the CCP label now: Isometric v1.0 and VM0044 v1.2 were approved on 13 August 2025. Check ICVCM's assessment status for later decisions on Puro's methodology.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible records each batch the same way whichever registry you pick: kiln sensor temperature logs, chain of custody, geotagged photos and H:Corg results, with automatic flags, in one verifier evidence pack. The chosen registry and its verifier make the call.
