# Rajkot aluminium foundries run mostly on furnace oil: does CBAM reach their castings and extrusions?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/rajkot-aluminium-foundry-furnace-oil-cbam

Extrusions and window frames, yes: CN 7604 and 7610 are covered. Castings only when declared under 7616, not as machine or vehicle parts. Rajkot's about 60 aluminium units use about 2,775 toe a year, 64% of it furnace oil, and its 20 extruders alone burn 1,974 toe. That oil is your CBAM figure.

## Rajkot's aluminium units in numbers

- About 60 units: 21 sand casting (790 t a year), 19 gravity die casting (2,628 t) and 20 extrusion (6,252 t), about 9,670 t in all.
- Energy about 2,775 toe a year: furnace oil 1,807 kL (1,784 toe, 64%), electricity 5.7 million kWh, coke 756 t, LPG 36 t.
- Extrusion units use 1,974 toe, sand casting 207 and GDC 594.
- Main input is scrap and LM-grade ingot. Extruders melt scrap in oil-fired furnaces into billets, then reheat billets in box furnaces at 450 to 500 °C.

## Which of your goods CBAM reaches

- Profiles, tubes, tracks and sections under CN 7604 and 7608: covered.
- Window and door frames under 7610: covered.
- Generic cast articles under 7616 99 10: covered.
- Pistons, engine parts and compressor parts classed in chapters 84 or 87: not covered today.
- Your EU importer's CN code decides, and importers bringing in 50 t or less of CBAM goods a year are exempt.

## Why furnace oil is nearly the whole figure

Aluminium counts direct emissions only, so your power bills stay out. Scrap carries zero embedded emissions. For a scrap-based extruder that leaves the oil burnt in the melting, holding and reheating furnaces. Bought LM-grade ingot or billet is different: each lot brings its maker's figure, or the default value, as a precursor.

## What to keep from this month

- Furnace oil invoices and tank dips at month start and end, per furnace if you can.
- Scrap and ingot purchases in tonnes, with supplier and whether scrap is pre-consumer or post-consumer.
- Despatch tonnes by CN code, counting only goods that meet sale specifications.
- Any recuperator or furnace relining, with dates, so a drop in oil per tonne is explained.

## Worked example: a typical Rajkot extrusion unit

- Thermal energy: 88 toe a year; at the cluster's 1,807 kL per 1,784 toe, about 89 kL of furnace oil
- CO2: 89,000 L x 2.97 kg = about 264 t a year
- Output: 6,252 t / 20 units = about 313 t of profiles a year
- Direct figure: 264 / 313 = about 0.85 t CO2 per tonne, scrap at zero, power not counted
- India default for profiles with the 2026 mark-up: 3.444 x 1.10 = 3.788 t per tonne

Estimate from TERI's 2016 averages, with all thermal energy taken as furnace oil. A unit buying ingot instead of scrap adds that ingot's figure. Use your own logs.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your furnace oil, scrap and ingot invoices into monthly records and its CBAM tools turn them into the per-tonne figure by CN code that your EU importer asks for, traced to each bill.
