# How much electricity does a stove, gas lighter, cutlery or cookware unit use a year?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/rajkot-kitchenware-unit-electricity-by-product

TERI's Rajkot profile puts a typical unit at 247,565 kWh a year for stoves, 116,405 for knives and cutlery, 73,398 for cookers and non-stick, 72,424 for gas lighters and 31,636 for kitchen baskets. Spread over each unit's output, that is about 0.26 to 0.52 kWh a piece.

## Per unit and per piece

- Stove: 10 units averaging 4.8 lakh pieces; 247,565 kWh, about 0.52 kWh a stove.
- Kitchen basket and others: 55 units averaging 85,000 pieces; 31,636 kWh, about 0.37 kWh a piece.
- Gas lighter: 53 units averaging 2.1 lakh pieces; 72,424 kWh, about 0.35 kWh a lighter.
- Cooker and non-stick cookware: 36 units averaging 2.6 lakh pieces; 73,398 kWh, about 0.29 kWh a piece.
- Knife and cutlery: 196 units averaging 4.4 lakh pieces; 116,405 kWh plus 0.144 toe of fuel, about 0.26 kWh a piece.

## Why stoves top the list

A stove starts as CRC sheet deep drawn on a hydraulic press, is spot welded for the stand, then tested for burner efficiency and flame stability. Presses of 100 to 150 t on 7.5 to 15 hp pumps, and 5 to 10 kVA welders, draw far more per piece than a mechanical press stamping a spoon. Non-stick pans add an electric oven at 400 to 450 C for about 30 minutes per cycle.

## What your kWh leaves out

- Chrome plating on stoves and kitchen baskets is usually sent out. Ask the plater for its power per batch, or list it as outsourced.
- Piezo units for gas lighters are imported; their footprint sits with the maker.
- The steel, aluminium and plastic, which normally outweigh the factory power.

## What to send a buyer

1. kWh per piece for the product they buy, not the plant average. If lines share a meter, split by machine hours and say so.
2. Generator diesel, if any.
3. Grams of each material per piece, and what was outsourced.

## CO2 per piece from factory power (estimate)

- Stove: 0.52 kWh x 0.675 = 0.35 kg CO2
- Kitchen basket: 0.37 kWh x 0.675 = 0.25 kg
- Gas lighter: 0.35 kWh x 0.675 = 0.24 kg
- Cooker or non-stick pan: 0.29 kWh x 0.675 = 0.19 kg
- Knife or cutlery piece: 0.26 kWh x 0.675 = 0.18 kg

Unit kWh, unit counts and output from TERI's Rajkot kitchenware profile; pieces per unit are category output divided by units, so a unit making heavier items will sit higher. Grid factor CEA FY 2025-26.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible keeps each month's electricity bill behind the kWh you report, in a Scope 3 supplier trail the buyer can open and check, so a per-piece figure rests on bills rather than a spreadsheet.
