# Rajkot pump makers run almost wholly on electricity: what carbon data can they give pump buyers?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/rajkot-pump-makers-carbon-data-for-buyers

Give the plant's monthly kWh and DG diesel, Scope 1 and 2 totals, and a figure per pump model split by machine hours, not a flat average. Rajkot's roughly 1,000 pump makers used 70 million kWh and only 170 kL of diesel in 2014 to 15, so power is 97% of their energy.

## The cluster in TERI's 2015 profile

- About 1,000 pump makers, up from 10 in 1994 and about 350 in 2010.
- About 50 large units make 3,500 pump sets a month, about 200 medium units 1,000, and the rest around 500.
- About 30,000 pump sets a day, roughly 9 million a year. About 80% of the submersibles have water-filled motors; V6 8-stage 7.5 hp and V6 10-stage 10 hp are the commonest models.
- Some makers in other pump clusters, Coimbatore among them, buy components from Rajkot.

## Where a pump unit's power goes

- Machining: about 50%. Hydraulic presses: about 20%. Assembly and testing: about 20%. Compressed air and lighting: the rest.
- A unit making 500 pump sets a month uses about 30,000 kWh a year, one making 3,500 about 200,000: roughly 5 kWh per pump set.
- Across the cluster, 70 million kWh for 9 million pump sets is nearer 8 kWh each, so work out your own figure rather than borrow the typical one.
- Diesel runs DG sets only during cuts: 170 kL for the whole cluster in a year.

## What to send a buyer

1. Twelve months of PGVCL bills and DG diesel slips, totalled by month.
2. Scope 2 (grid power) and Scope 1 (diesel) in tonnes CO2e, with factors named.
3. Pump sets made by model each month.
4. A figure per model, allocated by machine hours, with the method written down.
5. For a product footprint: castings, stampings, copper winding wire and motor laminations from your suppliers, which usually outweigh your own power.

## Worked example: a medium unit, 1,000 pump sets a month, two models

- Plant: 60,000 kWh x 0.675 = 40.5 t; DG 170 L x 2.645 = 0.45 t; total 40.95 t CO2 a year
- Flat average: 40.95 t / 12,000 pump sets = 3.4 kg each
- Machine hours: 4,000 V6 submersibles x 3 h + 8,000 monoblocks x 1 h = 20,000 h; 40.95 t / 20,000 h = 2.05 kg per hour
- V6 submersible: 3 h x 2.05 = 6.1 kg CO2 each
- Monoblock: 1 h x 2.05 = 2.0 kg CO2 each, not the 3.4 a flat average would give

Power use is TERI's typical medium unit. The 170 L is the cluster's diesel spread across about 1,000 units, an estimate; the model mix and hours are examples.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible keeps every PGVCL bill and diesel slip as a dated record, so the monthly Scope 1 and 2 behind your per-model split is there when a buyer asks where a number came from.
