# What changes in coal and CO2 when a refractory kiln switches to a biomass gasifier?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/refractory-kiln-coal-to-biomass-gasifier-co2

Coal goes to zero and fossil CO2 falls by about 2,360 t a year in BEE's Godavari report: 1,350 t of coal out, 2,160 t of wood in, plus some fan power. The wood's own CO2 is biogenic and reported separately. Project cost Rs 17.00 lakh, payback 2.73 years at 2010 prices.

## The kiln and the gasifier in the report

- Downdraft kilns on an 8 day cycle: 2 days slow firing, 4 rapid, 1 soaking, 1 cooling. Efficiency 10 to 15%.
- 45 t of coal a batch at 4,200 kcal/kg during rapid firing, 30 batches a year: 1,350 t.
- A 500,000 kcal/h downdraft gasifier on wood chips of 2 to 3 inches at 15% moisture, with 6 hp of fans.
- 9 t of wood a day, 72 t a batch, 2,160 t a year, costed at 2,000 kcal/kg.
- Project cost Rs 17.00 lakh, saving Rs 6.23 lakh a year, payback 2.73 years, one week of downtime.

## Counting the CO2 properly

The coal is fossil: 1,350 t x 1.76 = 2,376 t of CO2 gone from Scope 1. The wood is biomass, so its CO2 is reported separately as biogenic, outside the scope totals. Methane and nitrous oxide from the gasifier flame stay in Scope 1 but are small. The fans add a little grid power. The report's 2,430 t used 1.8 t of CO2 per tonne of coal; on our factor the net cut is about 2,360 t.

## Before you sign

- Wood supply: 2,160 t a year is about 180 t a month, bought by weight with invoices that name the material.
- Moisture: the 2,000 kcal/kg in the costing implies wet wood. Drier chips mean fewer tonnes and a smaller bill.
- Gasifier size against your peak heat demand in rapid firing, not the batch average.
- If a buyer or lender asks, keep records that the wood is residue or from replanted land.

## 30 batches a year

- Coal removed: 1,350 t x 1.76 = 2,376 t CO2
- Gasifier fans: 6 hp, about 4.5 kW x 24 h x 8 days x 30 batches = 25,920 kWh x 0.675 = 17.5 t CO2 (estimate)
- Net fossil cut: about 2,358 t CO2 a year
- Wood: 2,160 t, its CO2 reported separately as biogenic

Coal at our Indian coal factor and grid power at CEA's FY 2025-26 factor, both estimates. The report gives fan power only as a cost, so the kWh line assumes the fans run through every batch.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads coal invoices and electricity bills into monthly CO2 records, each linked to its bill, so the year before and the year after a fuel switch sit side by side. The green loan check shows what a lender will ask for.
