# Does captive coal power at Renukoot count in the CBAM figure for its aluminium?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/renukoot-aluminium-smelter-captive-coal-cbam

No. For aluminium, CBAM charges only direct emissions from the smelter: anode carbon, perfluorocarbons and casting fuel. Power from a captive coal plant is indirect and reported separately. It is still the biggest part of the metal's footprint, and buyers asking for a full figure will see it.

## Charged

- Anode carbon consumed.
- Perfluorocarbons from anode effects.
- Fuel for casting and anode baking.

## Reported, not charged

Electricity, including from your own coal plant. Report kWh per tonne and the plant's actual emissions per kWh, not the grid average.

## Your own inventory

The captive power plant is your Scope 1. Do not count its emissions again as Scope 2 for the smelter.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible keeps each site's fuel, power and production records together, so the embedded emissions you send an EU importer trace back to dated documents.
