# Do rice paddy water-management credits get the ICVCM CCP label?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/rice-methane-credits-ccp-label

Some do. ICVCM lists two rice water-management methodologies as CCP-Approved: Gold Standard's adjusted water management method v1.0 and Verra's VM0051 v1.1. On Verra, VM0051 v1.1 projects must also use a five-year crediting period renewable twice, and any VT0008 benchmark analysis must show credit revenue decisively changes the economics.

## Status by methodology

- Gold Standard, methane emission reduction by adjusted water management in rice cultivation, v1.0: CCP-Approved.
- Verra VM0051, improved management in rice production systems, v1.1: CCP-Approved.
- Verra VM0051 v1.0: withdrawn from assessment, so ICVCM takes no decision on it.
- Global Carbon Council, adjusted water management in rice cultivation, v1.0: no decision shown.
- Isometric, rice methane reduction, v1.0: no decision shown.

## Verra's two extra conditions for VM0051 v1.1

- A crediting period of five years, renewable twice: 15 years at most.
- If a benchmark analysis with tool VT0008 v1.0 is used, it must show carbon revenue increases the project's economic performance decisively and lifts the financial indicator to or above the benchmark.
- Because conditions apply, the verification report needs the completed CCP Label Eligibility Verification Report Checklist attached.

## Methane is why the tonnes add up

Verra converts methane at a 100-year GWP of 28 (IPCC AR5) for reductions from 2021 on, so each tonne of methane avoided is 28 t CO2e. Small changes in flooding across many farms add up quickly, which is also why verifiers look hard at how each field was managed.

## Example: a 15-year cap on a VM0051 v1.1 project

- Methane avoided across member farms: 200 t CH4 a year
- In CO2e: 200 x 28 = 5,600 t a year
- Over three five-year periods: 5,600 x 15 = 84,000 t, before deductions

Tonnes are an example. Actual reductions come from VM0051's equations and the project's monitoring.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible gives carbon credit eligibility signals from your records and, for carbon removal projects, prepares a verifier evidence pack for the accredited verifier. Verra applies any CCP label at issuance.
