# How should an engineering unit near Rourkela count the steel it buys from the plant or its stockyards?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/rourkela-ancillary-units-steel-scope-3

Steel bought is Scope 3, Category 1, purchased goods: tonnes from your invoices multiplied by a per tonne figure for that product. Ask the stockyard or the plant for the plant's product figure; if you only have a route average for blast furnace steel, use it, name the source and mark it as an estimate.

## Steps

1. Total tonnes by product from purchase invoices.
2. Get a plant figure per tonne, or a stated average.
3. Multiply and keep the source next to the number.

## Why it matters

For a fabricator, bought steel is usually far bigger than its own electricity and fuel. A buyer asking for your footprint will look here first.

## If you export to the EU

Fabricated structures under CN 7308 are CBAM goods. Your own figure then carries the steel as a precursor, and default values apply if you cannot get the mill figure.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads coal, coke, gas, electricity and freight invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so each figure in a CBAM or buyer response can be traced back to the documents behind it.
