# When must we review our SBTi targets, and what if they no longer meet the criteria?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/sbti-five-year-target-review-deadline

At least every five years, under C26 of the SBTi Corporate Near-Term Criteria V5.3.1. SBTi's FAQ puts the trigger date at the month end five years after your latest validated publication. If the targets no longer meet current criteria, updated targets are due within 12 months of that date.

## Find your trigger date

1. Take the date your validated targets were last published. If you updated only some targets, the clock runs from the oldest active target's first validation, or from the last date all targets were updated together (footnote 28).
2. Add five years and go to the end of that month. That is the trigger date.
3. Within six months of it, complete the review and send evidence to SBTi Services. The FAQ calls this optional but strongly recommended, and required if you want an extension or waiver or are unsure whether to update.
4. If an update is needed, submit revised targets within 12 months of the trigger date, under the criteria in force when you resubmit.

## Who has extra time

- Targets validated in 2020 or earlier: C26 says they should have been reviewed by 2025. SBTi's FAQ allows them to submit updated targets through 2026.
- Companies planning to update under the Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2.0 or a forthcoming sector standard can ask for an extension, for all scopes or for Scope 3 alone.

## What a missed deadline looks like

SBTi Commitment and Target Statuses V2.1 marks a target Expired when the deadline set by the review outcome passes with no new submission, or when 12 months pass after the trigger date with neither the review form nor a new submission. Buyers checking the dashboard will see that label.

## If you are a supplier

Your customer's review can reset what it asks of you. A target updated after 1 February 2027 may be set under V2.0, where customers can count suppliers that are in transition or net-zero aligned. Expect new questions in the year after its trigger date.

## Example: targets published on 10 March 2022

- Five years later: March 2027; trigger date 31 March 2027
- Review evidence to SBTi Services by 30 September 2027 (six months)
- Updated targets, if needed, by 31 March 2028 (twelve months)
- Nothing filed by 31 March 2028: the targets can show as Expired

Example dates.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible keeps each year's Scope 1 and 2 records from your own bills and invoices, so a review can compare the base year with recent years line by line. It does not set, submit or validate SBTi targets; SBTi Services validates them.
