# How does a foundry in Shivamogga work out carbon per tonne of castings?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/shivamogga-foundry-castings-carbon-data

Count coke in the cupola, or electricity for induction melting, plus fuel for ladle heating and heat treatment. Divide by tonnes of good castings, not liquid metal, because rejects and returns are melted again. Most machine-part castings sit outside CBAM today, but buyers still ask.

## Inputs

- Foundry coke for cupolas.
- Electricity for induction furnaces and sand plant.
- Pig iron and scrap bought, for cradle-to-gate.

## Yield

Good castings per tonne melted decides the figure. Track it monthly from the melting log and dispatch register.

## Worked example

- Induction melting: 650 kWh per tonne melted x 0.710 kg = 462 kg CO2
- Yield: 0.70 t good castings per tonne melted
- About 660 kg CO2 per tonne of good castings from melting

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads bills, fuel invoices and production records into dated, fingerprinted records, so the figure you send a buyer can be traced to its documents.
