# I have a smart prepaid meter and no monthly bill. Where do I get Scope 2 data?

Take the kWh from the meter itself. Download monthly consumption from your discom's app or consumer portal, or photograph the meter's cumulative kWh reading on the same date each month and subtract. Ask the discom for a monthly statement if you need a document. Do not turn recharge rupees into kWh.

## Sources of kWh, best first

1. Discom statement or energy statement for the month, downloaded or requested in writing. It carries the discom's name and is the strongest evidence.
2. Consumption history in the discom's smart meter app or portal, which usually shows daily or monthly kWh. Save a screenshot or export each month.
3. Meter register photos: the cumulative kWh reading on the first day of each month, with the meter number blanked out if you share it. Consumption is the difference between two readings.
4. Sub-meters you own, for splitting use between units or tenants.

## Why recharge amounts are not a substitute

A prepaid recharge covers energy charges plus fixed or demand charges, electricity duty, and sometimes arrears or slab changes. Dividing rupees by an average tariff gives an estimate, not a reading. If that is all you have for a month, label it as an estimate and replace it once the discom data arrives.

## Points to check on the meter

- Is the register kWh or kVAh? Commercial and industrial meters may bill in kVAh. Use the kWh register if the meter shows one, or kVAh times the recorded power factor, labelled an estimate.
- Is it a net meter with rooftop solar? Use import units, not the net figure, and do not treat exported units as consumption.
- Did the meter change mid-year? Keep the final reading of the old meter and the first of the new one.

## What the consumer rules give you

Smart prepaid meters are being installed under the Ministry of Power's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). The Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Amendment Rules, 2023 say smart meters are read remotely at least once a day and that consumers can see their consumption data on a website, mobile app or by SMS. Consumers with smart prepaid meters get their consumption and balance at least daily.

The rules do not set a common format for a downloadable monthly statement, so what each discom offers varies. Ask yours in writing and keep the reply with your records.

## Worked example: one month from meter photos

- Cumulative reading on 1 April: 18,452.6 kWh
- Cumulative reading on 1 May: 19,874.1 kWh
- Consumption = 19,874.1 minus 18,452.6 = 1,421.5 kWh
- Scope 2 = 1,421.5 x 0.710 = 1,009.3 kg CO2, about 1 tonne

0.710 kg CO2 per kWh is the CEA weighted average grid factor, version 21.0, for location-based Scope 2.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills, and a photo showing two meter readings gives the units as their difference, which suits prepaid meters. It also takes hardware and meter feeds, set up with the Senseible team for each customer rather than as a self-serve integration.
