# What is the carbon footprint of sodium hypochlorite per tonne?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/sodium-hypochlorite-carbon-footprint-per-tonne

Sodium hypochlorite is made from chlorine and caustic soda, both from chlor-alkali electrolysis, which runs on a lot of electricity. So its footprint largely follows the power behind that plant. A plant on captive coal power has a much higher figure than one on cleaner supply.

## Where it comes from

- Electricity for chlor-alkali cells, the main share.
- Mixing chlorine into caustic soda solution.
- Transport of a dilute solution, often 10 to 12 percent.

## Ask for

A supplier figure per tonne at the strength delivered, and the power source of the chlor-alkali plant behind it.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the energy invoices behind the making stage into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, and keeps material invoices on the Scope 3 trail. Material factors come from your supplier or a named database and are labelled with their source, so the product figure can be traced line by line.
