# Should I use my solar inverter reading or the net meter for Scope 2?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/solar-inverter-reading-vs-net-meter-scope-2

Use the net meter's import register for Scope 2: that is grid electricity you bought. Solar you used yourself equals generation, from the inverter or generation meter, minus units exported. Never subtract the inverter reading from the grid bill.

## Three numbers

- Grid import, from the import register: Scope 2.
- Export, from the export register.
- Generation, from the generation meter or inverter.

## Self use

Self used solar = generation minus export. Report it as renewable energy used, with no grid emissions.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills, including kVAh, demand and solar export lines, into dated records with the units, factor and year behind every Scope 2 figure.
