# Does grid power count in a South African ferrochrome exporter's CBAM figure?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/south-africa-ferrochrome-exporter-eskom-power-cbam

Not for certificates. Ferroalloys are iron and steel goods, charged on direct emissions only: reductant carbon, electrode paste and fuel burnt on site. Grid electricity is reported as indirect emissions. On a coal heavy grid it is often the largest part of the full footprint, so buyers will still ask.

## Counted

- Coke, anthracite and char used as reductants, through a carbon mass balance.
- Electrode paste consumed.
- Fuel for pelletising, preheating or sintering inside the installation.

## Reported, not charged

Electricity per tonne multiplied by the grid factor for the year. Keep it ready: EU stainless mills report it in their own footprints.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your fuel and electricity bills into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions your EU importer asks for, and its CBAM cost calculator estimates certificate cost from 2026 to 2034 for covered goods. Senseible does not verify emissions or file CBAM declarations.
