# What grid emission factor should a Sri Lankan factory use?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/sri-lanka-grid-emission-factor-for-factories

Roughly around half a kilogram of CO2 per kWh, but it swings with rainfall, because hydro competes with the coal plant and oil generation. Use the official or IEA figure for your reporting year and cite it. If a figure for your year is not out yet, use the latest and say so.

## Why it moves

Sri Lanka's mix is hydro, one large coal plant, oil and growing solar. Dry years mean more coal and oil.

## Sources

Use the utility, the sustainable energy authority or the IEA for the year. Name it.

## Watch for

- Generator diesel during outages, which is Scope 1.
- Applying an Indian or regional factor, which is wrong for Sri Lanka.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills into a dated, fingerprinted record per site and applies the grid factor you choose with its source and year shown, so a buyer can see exactly which figure was used.
