# What goes into the CBAM figure for aluminium from the Sumgait smelter?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/sumgait-aluminium-smelter-cbam-figure

Only direct emissions count for aluminium: CO2 from anodes consumed in the pots, perfluorocarbons from anode effects, and fuel for casting and anode baking. Electricity is reported but not charged. Alumina refined at Ganja is not a CBAM precursor.

## Direct emissions

- Anode carbon consumed per tonne of metal.
- Perfluorocarbons from anode effects, as CO2 equivalent.
- Gas for casting, holding furnaces and anode baking.

## Alumina

Alumina is not listed in CBAM, so its refining emissions stay out of the CBAM figure. EU buyers asking for a full footprint will still want them.

## Electricity

Smelting uses a lot of power from a gas heavy grid. Report kWh per tonne and the factor, even though it is not charged.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible keeps each site's fuel, power and production records together, so the embedded emissions you send an EU importer trace back to dated documents.
