# How does a Surat diamond polishing unit count its electricity emissions?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/surat-diamond-unit-electricity-emissions

Multiply the kWh on each month's electricity bill by the CEA grid factor of 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh. That is the unit's Scope 2. Divide by carats polished in the month if a buyer wants a per-carat making figure, and say that it covers your electricity only.

## Steps

Add kWh from every meter the unit pays for.

Multiply by 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh (CEA, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0).

Divide by carats polished in the same month.

## What it leaves out

Mining and rough supply sit in Scope 3 and are usually far larger than polishing. Label your figure as the polishing step only.

## Worked example: one month (illustrative inputs)

- Electricity: 12,000 kWh x 0.710 = 8,520 kg CO2
- Carats polished: 400
- Per carat: 8,520 / 400 = 21.3 kg CO2 per carat

Quantities are illustrative; use your bills and the polishing register.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site. Intensity per unit uses the activity count you enter, and estimates are labelled as estimates.
