# What grid emission factor should a factory in Tanzania use?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/tanzania-grid-emission-factor-for-factories

Tanzania generates from hydro and natural gas, and new large hydro has been lowering the factor. A location based figure of roughly 0.3 to 0.5 kg CO2 per kWh is typical in recent years; use the official or IEA figure for the reporting year and state source and year.

## Location based

Use the national figure for the year of the bills. Dry years with less hydro push it up.

## Generators

Diesel run during outages is Scope 1, not Scope 2. Keep fuel invoices separate from power bills.

## Market based

Without contracts or certificates for renewable power, use the grid average here too.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills into dated, fingerprinted records and keeps location based and market based figures side by side, each with the factor and year used.
