# How do I measure the gas saved by sending tile kiln exhaust heat to the dryer?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/tile-kiln-exhaust-heat-to-dryer-gas-saving

Meter the dryer gas per square metre of tiles before and after the change, over days with similar output and tile size. Multiply the gas saved by 2.05 kg CO2 per scm. Your actual gas bills fall, so the cut shows in Scope 1.

## What to compare

- Dryer gas per square metre, not per day.
- Similar tile size and body moisture.
- The same kiln output.

## Check the kiln too

Drawing heat from the kiln cooling zone can change kiln fan load or firing. Meter the kiln fuel and fans as well, so the saving is net.

## Reporting

The saving shows as lower gas in your bills, so no separate credit is needed. Keep the before and after readings with the date of the change.

## Worked example: before and after (illustrative inputs)

- Dryer gas before: 1,200 scm a day for 9,000 m2 of tiles
- Dryer gas after: 800 scm a day for 9,000 m2 of tiles
- Saving: 400 scm x 2.05 = 820 kg CO2 a day
- Per m2: 820 / 9,000 = 0.0911 kg CO2 per m2

Readings are illustrative; use dryer gas meters and the production register.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 records. A per-unit figure divides those by the output you enter, and purchased materials are added from supplier data on the Scope 3 trail, labelled by source.
