# How do I calculate the carbon footprint of tomato ketchup per kg?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/tomato-ketchup-carbon-footprint-per-kg

Weigh the tomato paste or fresh tomatoes, sugar, vinegar and spices per kg, and use supplier figures. Add cooking and pasteurising steam, filling electricity and the bottle or sachet, then divide plant energy by kg packed.

## Ingredients

- Tomato paste by solids, or fresh tomatoes and the evaporation energy to concentrate them.
- Sugar, vinegar, salt and spices.
- Bottles, caps, sachets and cartons.

## Process

- Cooking kettles on boiler steam.
- Homogenising and hot filling or pasteurising.
- Cooling, labelling and packing.

## Per kg

Report per kg packed. Concentrating fresh tomatoes takes far more steam than starting from paste.

## Worked example: sauce plant per kg (one month)

- Electricity: 20,000 kWh x 0.710 = 14,200 kg CO2
- PNG: 8,000 SCM x 2.05 = 16,400 kg CO2
- Kg of ketchup packed: 200,000
- Plant total: 30,600 / 200,000 = 0.153 kg CO2 per kg
- Add tomato paste, sugar and packaging for the full figure

Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
