# Does the UK CBAM count galvanizing, plating and machining emissions?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/uk-cbam-galvanizing-plating-boundary

Galvanizing, yes; plating, no. For iron or steel products, HMRC's UK CBAM guidance includes re-heating, casting, rolling, forging, annealing, pickling, coating, galvanizing and wire drawing. Plating, cutting, welding and finishing are outside, as is buying and maintaining equipment. Machining adds almost nothing, since it runs on power the UK does not count.

## Inside the boundary

- Raw material preparation: pre-heating, re-melting, alloying.
- Forming: casting, hot and cold rolling, forging, wire drawing.
- Pickling, annealing, coating and galvanizing.
- Emissions control for releases to air, water or ground.

## Outside the boundary

- Plating.
- Cutting.
- Welding.
- Finishing of iron or steel products.
- Purchase and maintenance of infrastructure and equipment.

## Precursors you bring in

Crude steel, pig iron, DRI, ferro-manganese, ferro-chrome, ferro-nickel and other iron or steel products you buy are precursors. Their embodied emissions are added to your own.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads LPG, furnace oil, coal and zinc bath fuel invoices by site, so galvanizing fuel can sit inside the figure and plating lines can be left out. We build the figure from your records and check every figure in-house; for the UK it must then be verified by a verifier accredited for UK CBAM. Have your own verifier? Send it to them.
