# How much energy does the Valsad chemical cluster use?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/valsad-chemical-cluster-gas-electricity

6,644 toe a year across 42 MSMEs making dyes, pigments, pesticides and pharma intermediates, by TERI's 2020-21 study for BEE: 4,802 toe of natural gas heat and 1,842 toe of electricity. Gas is 72% of the energy, yet electricity carries more of the CO2, roughly 56% (estimate).

## Valsad in four numbers

- 42 MSMEs.
- 62,410 t of product a year.
- Natural gas for process heat: 4,802 toe.
- Electricity: 1,842 toe, about 21.4 million kWh.

## Why a smaller energy share carries more CO2

Each GJ of gas burnt releases about 56 kg CO2. Each GJ of grid electricity carries about 188 kg at FY 2025-26's 0.675 kg per kWh, because most of India's power still comes from coal. So the 28% of energy that arrives as electricity outweighs the 72% that arrives as gas.

## Your unit against the cluster

The cluster averages about 0.11 toe, or 4.5 GJ, per tonne of product. A pigment unit with a spray dryer and a pesticide formulator that only blends will sit far apart, so set your own figure against your own past years, by product family.

## Records a buyer or auditor will ask for

1. Gas bills by month in scm, with the calorific value printed.
2. Electricity bills in kWh, and generator diesel if you run one.
3. Tonnes produced by product family in the same months.
4. Whether steam or utilities are shared with a neighbouring unit, and how you split them.

## Cluster CO2 at FY 2025-26 factors (estimate)

- Gas: 4,802 toe x 41.868 GJ = 201,050 GJ x 56.1 kg = about 11,280 t CO2
- Electricity: 1,842 toe x 11,630 kWh = 21.4 million kWh x 0.675 kg = about 14,460 t CO2
- Total about 25,740 t on 62,410 t of product = about 0.41 t CO2 per tonne
- A unit making 1,500 t on 510,000 kWh and 170,000 scm of gas: 344 t + 349 t = 693 t, 0.46 t per tonne

Unit count, output and energy from SAMEEEKSHA's summary of TERI's 2020-21 study for BEE. Gas at the IPCC 2006 default of 56.1 kg CO2 per GJ; the single unit uses Senseible's 2.05 kg per scm and is an assumed example. Grid factor from CEA's CO2 Baseline Database v22.0.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads gas and electricity bills into Scope 1 and 2 lines, at 2.05 kg CO2 per scm and the CEA grid factor, and drafts a self-declared BRSR energy and emissions table from them.
