# How does a Vapi or Ankleshwar dye unit count boiler coal emissions?

Canonical: https://senseible.earth/answers/vapi-ankleshwar-dye-unit-boiler-coal-emissions

Multiply tonnes of coal burnt in boilers and thermic fluid heaters by an emission factor, 2.42 kg CO2 per kg on Senseible's default or a factor from your coal's lab analysis, and report it as Scope 1. Use coal consumed, from stock records, not coal purchased.

## Coal consumed

Take opening stock plus purchases minus closing stock for the month. Moisture changes weight in the yard, so record it at the same point each time.

## Default or lab factor

Indian coal and imported coal differ widely in calorific value and carbon. A lab report giving gross calorific value or carbon content lets you calculate a plant-specific factor, which a verifier prefers to a default.

## Other Scope 1 sources

- Process emissions from reactions that release CO2, if any.
- Diesel in generators and forklifts.
- Refrigerant top-ups in chillers.

## Worked example: one month (illustrative inputs)

- Coal consumed: 300 t x 2.42 kg CO2 per kg = 726 t CO2
- Generator diesel: 2,000 litres x 2.68 = 5.36 t CO2
- Scope 1: 726 + 5.36 = 731.36 t CO2

Quantities are illustrative; use stock records and a lab-based factor where you have one.

## What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and diesel, LPG and gas invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record for each site. Intensity per unit uses the activity count you enter, and estimates are labelled as estimates.
